There is a beautiful practice in Buddhism called tonglen meditation. In it you take in the suffering of others and you send out relief. To help you relate to others you can think of your own suffering. For instance, if you want to relieve the suffering of those who are hungry, you can remember a time when you were hungry, this will help to connect you. This is a short explanation and a brief tonglen meditation led by Pema Chodron.
